Dear fraternity members, parents, alumni, prospective members, and the community,

My name is Nathan Sprague, and I am honored to be serving in my second term as President of the Gamma Chapter of Phi Kapa Tau at The Ohio State University. During my life I was fortunate enough to have good leaders and role models that helped shape me into who I am today, and I could not be more excited and grateful that my brothers have trusted me to be that person for them and the next generation.

I didn’t come into college knowing that I was going to join a fraternity. I stepped onto campus knowing only the stereotypes of Greek life that I had seen in movies, television shows, or heard from friends and family members. During my first few weeks at The Ohio State University, I found the stereotypes of fraternity men to be just that, stereotypes. The brothers of Phi Tau showed what being a member of a fraternity means and the value of joining one.

A fraternity is more than just a social club. At its core it is a brotherhood, but that is far from the only thing a member gains. The Phi Tau experience is built upon being true to what it means to be a fraternity, that is, to build a better man. This is done by adhering to the pillars of Phi Kappa Tau, which are brotherhood, service, ethical leadership, and exemplary character. Brotherhood means that you will find lifelong friends with whom you make memories that you will cherish forever. You will find support and encouragement when you need it and be pushed every day to be the best version of yourself. Service is giving back to your college and community, something that every Greek organization strives to do as much as possible. Ethical leadership goes hand-in- hand with exemplary character, which is something that must be developed. Phi Tau focuses on developing the character of each man to become their best version of themselves.

Gamma Chapter, not so long ago, in 2018 was recognized as the top Phi Tau chapter in the nation. After winning the Maxwell Award, the chapter unfortunately fell stagnant as it had accomplished its highest goal. Combine this with long lasting challenges during the coronavirus pandemic, and Gamma was no longer what it once was. We lost the spirit of brotherhood and the unified vision that every fraternity needs to thrive. However, for every step back that we took before, we have now taken two steps forward. Never during my time in the chapter have I experienced such a strong sense of brotherhood and excitement for the direction the fraternity is heading than now. The drive, passion, and commitment displayed by each member of the chapter is what will to continue to inspire change and build Gamma Chapter into a model for what Phi Kappa Tau was designed to be.

My vision for the Gamma Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau is to be the model fraternity on Ohio State’s campus. This will be done by sticking to our values and traditions that have stood the test of time. Gamma chapter will be a place for future leaders to learn and grow, a place where young men prepare themselves for life after graduation, a place for people who want to make memories, meet lifelong friends, and make the most out of their short time in college. My personal goal is to leave the chapter better than I found it. This can only be done through the hard work of each member. I want to continue to inspire every member to be the positive change they want to see. Everyone must be bought into the same image of what the chapter is supposed to be. I could not be more excited for what the future holds for Gamma Chapter, as the momentum we have built up and the people that are a part of the chapter are one of a kind.

Sincerely,

Nathan Sprague

President, Phi Kappa Tau, Gamma
